What is Liposuction?
Liposuction, also know as “lipoplasty” or “suction lipectomy”, is a cosmetic
procedure utilized to contour specific parts of the body by removing unwanted fat.
Liposuction is often performed on the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees,
upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck.
Who Is A Candidate For Liposuction?
Men or women of healthy weight who have unwanted excess fat in a particular area
are good candidates for this procedure. Patients with firm elastic skin and are younger
in age tend to see the best results. To minimize the risk of complication, it is important
that the patient is not significantly overweight and is in good health. Smoking contributes
to complications, so it is advised that the patient quit smoking at least two weeks prior
to the procedure. Patients suffering from diabetes, poor blood circulation, heart disease or
lung disease are more susceptible to complication.
About the Procedure…
Liposuction procedures take place in our fully accredited surgical facilities and can
performed under local, regional or general anesthesia. Your doctor will discuss your options
and decide which is best for you.
A small incision is made near the area where the fat is to be removed. A small narrow tube
(cannula) is inserted and used to break up the fat cells and to vaccum out the fat layers
beneath the skin. Intravenous fluids are administered to replace fluid lost along with the
fat during the procedure.
Refined methods of liposuction are available to achieve optimal results for your body
contouring. You and your doctor will discuss which method is right for you
The Fluid Injection Technique
Prior to the liposuction procedure described above, a medicated solution composed of a
salt solution, lidocaine (local anesthetic), and epinephrine (a drug used to contract blood
vessels) is injected into the liposuction site. This technique aids in removing the fat cells
more quickly and effectively. This method also helps reduce the amount of blood loss and the
amount of bruising after the surgery.
Tumescent Technique
The tumescent technique is performed in the same manor as described above. Large volumes
of fluid, often up to three times the amount of fat to be removed, is injected into the site
and is used to swell and firm the fat in order to effectively remove it using the cannula.
This method is most often performed under local anesthesia an can sometimes take as long as
five hours to perform.
Super-Wet Technique
This technique is similar to the tumescent technique, but requires significantly less fluid
to be injected. Usually, the amount of fluid injected is equal to the amount of fat to be removed.
This method takes approximately two hours to perform.
The Ultrasound- Assisted Lipoplasty Technique (UAL)
This technique requires the use of a cannula that produces ultrasonic energy as it passes
through the area of fat. The energy is used to break apart and liquefy the fat cells. The fat
is then removed using the traditional liposuction technique. This method is most effective in
fibrous areas of the body such as the upper back or in an enlarged male breast. This technique
takes slightly longer to perform than traditional liposuction.
